Sound Solutions for Football Stadiums

We have recently worked with Phantom Communications Ltd assisting them with their first major audio install at Bangor Football Club. We spoke to Jonathan Jones, Managing Director at Phantom, about what the end-users’ needs were and how they found the best audio solution for the club. We also explore what products were recommended by our technical team and the reasoning behind this.

So, what were the challenges of creating an audio system in an outdoor space.

Weather is always a factor and ensuring the sound delivers to all the areas required and can cope with match day crowd volume, is too.

Bangor Football Club also had their own requirements of what they wanted the system to do. The brief was to create a multifunctional solution that was able to play music and give live announcements – enhancing the pre-match atmosphere was key to the brief. They also required the installation to deliver clear messages and announcements via a wireless microphone whilst also playing background music.

The system needed to be robust for all weather use as its main purpose was to provide external audio within the stadium to deliver pitch side interviews and music for the spectators.

As Jonathan explains “There was an original system in place but as it was 12 years old it was decided that a complete replacement was the best option although we did manage to re-purpose some of the exiting cabling, we did install three new lines and replaced all the hardware and the audio cabinet speakers. Knowing the reputation for durability and longevity of TOA products we contacted them for technical support and to provide us with some product solutions.

The help we got from TOA was invaluable as this was our first large audio installation. We had lots of support from Kevin Swanton from the sales team and also full support from the TOA technical team with advice from design to installation queries. Mounting the speakers was the most challenging due to placement, height and location but overall, with the TOA team’s guidance, the installation went smoothly.

The project was time sensitive but the TOA team ensured that the designs provided made certain everything went to plan and the Club are very happy with their new system. As we currently look after the Stadiums data and security systems we will be adding audio to our maintenance schedule giving them a great sound system for many years to come.”

Rack mounted VM-2240 with DA-250FH and RM-200M

The audio is powered by the VM-2240 system amplifier and a DA-250FH digital power amplifier using an RM-200M remote microphone for announcements

5000 Series Wireless System

To facilitate pitch side interviews and commentary the WT-5805 UHF Diversity Wireless Tuner with WM-5270 Handheld Wireless Microphone were installed with a YW-4500 Wall Mount Antenna.
