Pairi Daiza Edenya: Reliable voice alarm communication in the world's largest indoor tropical garden
Pairi Daiza's new tropical world Edenya is an impressive architectural and experiential landmark. Covering more than 40,000 square metres, the indoor tropical garden recreates a warm, humid environment with temperatures of up to 40°C and humidity levels of around 90%.
For a space of this scale and complexity, reliable voice alarm and public address communication is essential. The challenge was to ensure clear and intelligible evacuation messages and announcements throughout the garden, even across long distances and from loudspeakers installed at significant height.
Together with local installer Eiffage-Collignon, TOA delivered a tailor-made voice alarm solution based on the VX-3000 system. The decentralised setup consists of five 19-inch equipment racks interconnected via a fibre optic network, providing reliable system communication across the entire site.
Edenya is divided into six themed indoor zones – The Mountain and Waterfall, Beach, Pantanal Cliff, Riverside Village, The Dry Forest and Rainforest – each with its own architectural characteristics and acoustic challenges. To ensure optimum speech intelligibility throughout the attraction, different loudspeaker types were carefully selected for the various applications. Ceiling loudspeakers provide clear announcements in public areas and accommodations, while dedicated wall-mounted loudspeakers cover technical rooms, corridors and service areas.
Within the tropical garden itself, eleven HA-2120EN Horn Array Loudspeakers provide long-distance speech intelligibility across the vast open space. In addition, seven CS-761BSW wall-mounted loudspeakers were installed along the elevated rope bridges, ensuring clear announcements even at heights of up to 17 metres.
Despite the enormous dimensions of the garden, only eleven HA-2120EN loudspeakers were required to provide wide-area coverage. Installed in clusters on several poles, they deliver intelligible announcements over distances of approximately 150 to 170 metres and around 20 metres below the installation height. Carefully configured delay settings allow all loudspeakers to operate as one integrated system, ensuring consistent sound coverage throughout the space.
"Designing a voice alarm system for a tropical garden of this size required careful planning”, says Quentin Jacobs, Project Director for Edenya from Eiffage-Collignon. “The combination of the decentralized VX-3000 architecture and the HA-2120EN horn array loudspeakers allowed us to achieve excellent speech intelligibility across very long distances while keeping the number of loudspeakers remarkably low."
The result is a reliable EN 54-compliant voice alarm solution that supports both everyday announcements and emergency communication, helping to keep visitors and staff informed and safe in one of Europe's most unique indoor environments.
